Our craft
Every Wooden Tales toy begins in Etikoppaka — a village in Andhra Pradesh known for its traditional wooden toy artistry. Here is how each piece is made.
Sourcing
We use locally sourced softwood, traditionally Ankudu wood from the region. Each piece is chosen for its suitability for turning and its connection to the Etikoppaka tradition.
Turning
Skilled artisans hand-turn the wood on a lathe, creating the smooth, rounded forms that define Etikoppaka toys. This centuries-old technique is at the heart of the craft.
Sanding
Every surface is sanded smooth so that edges are safe for little hands and the grain is ready for colour. No sharp edges — only gentle, tactile forms.
Natural dyes
We use natural vegetable dyes and non-toxic finishes. The colours are derived from traditional recipes, giving each toy its character while staying safe and eco-friendly.
Finishing
A final finish protects the wood and brings out its warmth. No harsh chemicals. The result is heirloom-quality — made to be cherished across generations.
Meet the makers
Our toys are made by artisans from Etikoppaka and the surrounding region — many from families that have been turning and painting wood for generations. Etikoppaka toys are recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI) craft of India. When you buy from Wooden Tales, you are supporting these skills and keeping this story alive.
